Bevagna
Strategically located in the centre of Umbria, Bevagna is
one of the most perfect locations to stay and is an ideal
base for day tours of the most well known towns of the
region.
Bevagna is listed in the recommended selection of the
most beautiful villages of Italy. It's famous for its ancient
roots which go back to the Roman period and for its
stunning monuments from the Medieval time as well as
for the excellent quality of life based on centuries old
traditions and wisdom.
Built on the Roman Flaminia road (3rd c. b.C.) , Bevagna was once a flourishing Roman centre with a forum, several
pagan temples, a theatre, an amphitheatre and beautiful baths decorated with black and white mosaics floor. The ruins
of many of these places still exist and nowadays can be visited within the town's walls.
During the Middle Age Bevagna was a free commune run by the Consuls, whose 13th c. palace is still visible in the
main square and houses a most beautiful and unexpected 19th c. belle époque theatre. The main square is considered
a real jewel as it is surrounded by three medieval Romanesque churches dating from the 12th c. and almost unspoilt.
The inhabitants of the town, the “bevanati” are renowned for their ingeniousness and for their good sense of humour.
Bevagna is a small and welcoming town - a living museum where the past plays an active role in the present - where
gastronomy, handicraft, feasts and religion are based on age-old traditions, making the town one of the richest in
cultural heritage.
